The European Union And Turkey

Will Turkey join the European Union in the future? Do you think they should?
There is a lot of talk about Turkey joining the european union in the near future and I don’t quite understand what the reasons are why they would want them to join.
1. The country is poor and needs a lot of money from the union to be build up
2. By the time they join they will have the largest population and therefore have the most to say
3. It is an islamic country that could also destabalize the entire union
I am not Turkish but I lived in Turkey for 6 years.
So I know them very well…
OK, Lets work on your statements:
Number 1; Turkey is not a poor country. Well depends on your comparison of course! They are poorer than Germany, France, UK but they are richer then most of the EU countries such as Bulgaria, Poland, Slovenia, Latvia and Romania.
And Turkish economy is bigger than at least 15 small-size EU countries economies combined all together!
And their military power is unbeliavable!!
In EU, they have the 5th richest and largest army right after Germany, France, UK and Italy.
Number 2; You mentioned population. That is probably right. Right now Turkish population is about the 3rd in EU after Germany and France. When considering the aging population of these two countries, Turkey will definetly be the first within the EU. French opposition to Turkey’s membership does make sense from this point of view.
And nearly half of the turkish population is under the age of 18. This young population creates an impotant advantage for the future. Thats why Turkey is important in EU.
Number 3; Yes Turkey is mostly muslim. In my opinion a muslim member within EU will give a great message to the world and help EU to become a superpower. And plus even though they are muslim Turkey is a strong ally for most of the western countries.
Turkey is close to the very important oil reserves in the middle east and eurasia. Recent France-Iran flirtings show us that we might see contradicting middle east policies between US and EU. That makes Turkey even more important base for EU.
All in all, Turkey’s entry will not be easy, they have lots of issues regarding free speech and minoriy rights. We should not forget Turkey is a very big country and it will be hard for EU to digest it for the first few years. But in long run I think Turkey will be a very important member and help EU to become superpower.
They are not like Latvia who became a member in only 5 years. Whole process will take at least 13-15 years. Turkish economy is developing way faster than any other EU countries so by that time Turkey will be even more powerful.
It is Europe’s decision; small union without Turkey or superpower with it.
