Immigration – does government policy have any real effect?
Both Europe and the US are seeing record levels of immigration.
The UK have millions (literally) of workers coming from new member states in the European Union, while seeming to encourage the continued drip drip of immigration from Africa and Asia.
The US is awash with Mexican arrivals, and also it appears, people coming from Canada!
I’m not trying to start a debate about race. I just want to know if you think immigration can ever really be controlled by government policy? Are the governments really trying?
If we don’t let people in, then do they just come anyway as illegals? And if thats the case, what can anyone do about it?
Policy is one thing. Enforcement is an entirely different thing. If the United States was serious about enforcing the its policies that are the law, then they would go after employers who hire undocumented workers, and they would have some kind of oversight on the use of Social Security numbers. It seems to me that it wouldn’t be too hard to notice if a person’s SSN was showing up with multiple employers in different regions of the country.
The other thing about immigration is the corporate desire for cheap labor and a large number of undocumented workers will drive the wages down for everyone.
