European Union Vacancies

Why is there mass immigration into the UK ?
With the freedom of movement guaranteed within the European economic union, ensuring that there are plenty of Europeans for every job vacancy, why is there a need for immigration from other parts of the world, (asylum excepted) ?
Your question suggests you have no real concept of how hard life is for the vast majority of the people on this earth. As an example, think of an African farmer, against a British one. Where we have tractors for the hard work, and clean water piped to our land, they will do everything by hand- including making the implements they need to do the work, in baking hot sun. The individual crops will need more tending, more watering, due to climate differences and the heat.
So, if you were bent over in the dirt for 12 hours a day everyday, tired, for the barest means to feed yourself and family, and someone in the village got word that their son had managed to make it to another country, where he was housed, given a uniform, and worked sat down in a nice cool building sorting envelopes (for example) for more money each week than you had even heard of- that he did things like going to restaurants, had a machine that played music into his ears (Ipod), and had met a woman there that he might marry which would mean he can stay for ever, that when he was sick the hospital took him in via ambulance, and the operation was done the same day to save his life- and they didn’t ask for one penny, that he had seen a man who had made all his teeth straight and clean, for a small fee, that he travelled to work on a nice sheltered train (instead of on foot), and that life was now a thousand times better than anything he could’ve dreamed of, would you be tempted to follow him?
That is why the immigrant comes. The other part of your question is why we allow it. There is no single answer to that. Obviously “illegal” immigration is not allowed, but neither are sufficient measures in place to stop it. The poor and needy will always try to reach better places, as in their case the grass is always going to be greener on this side, and desperate times call for desperate measures, which is why they risk life and limb to reach us. The immigrants you seem to be referring to are non-EU, and therefore will try to reach the EU and then Britain. This is probably a result of the Empire, when we were viewed as a superpower. Many will come from former colonies, trying to reach the “parent land”, believing that life will be better if they can get there.
The main reason that immigration happens is because the western world doesn’t really give a toss about the starvation, death rate, infant mortality, and general disease in the third world. There is massive inequality between the developed and the developing/ third world, purely down to the chance or luck of where one is born.
The average westerner may pretend to care- they might send a few pounds to Live Aid/ Telethon events, but not many would actually give up any of their own home comforts to let the third world have a share. This “blind eye” position means that ‘we’ all accept that it is ok for the Queen to live in palaces of opulence, and it is ok for the Dubai sheikhs to build artificial islands in the sea for multi-millionaires to live in for a few weeks of the year, and we accept the idea that drug giants can patent their discoveries and charge the earth for them rather than simply charging the pence that the individual drugs cost to make. We therefore see ourselves as better humans, more deserving, more entitled- we are living examples of non-caring elitist people who will happily let others die just to maintain the best lifestyle we can have.
To quote Bob Marley,
“There is one question, I’d really love to ask… Is there a place for the hopeless sinner, who has hurt all mankind just to save his own?”
So, we can carry on believing that our history- the Empire, “winning” of wars etc entitles us to live in relative luxury whilst our brothes and sisters (we are one human family!) die elsewhere, or we can realise the hideous legacy our history has created, and realise why the Muslims and others hate the west (with good reason), and start to make changes.
I notice that most of your answers so far are from ignorant people, who are racist, superior, and uncaring. This is the main problem facing the world- how to change to a system where all are given equal opportunity, where technologies and medicines are shared on a non-profit basis, and where food is given to those who need it instead of thrown away or stored in huge EU warehouses for no good reason other than to control artificial prices. I suggest that instead of pride in our history, the English should be appalled at the ignorance and cruelty we have imposed on the world over successive centuries. What do you expect the former slaves think of the brutal masters? What do you think Zulus think of the Dutch and English invaders. Have you ever watched the films “Zulu” or “Ghandi”. What the hell do people expect the third world to do? Oh yes, sorry- I forgot- they don’t care do they? As long as you have your Ipod, the latest trainers, the Sun to read, and a few pints or pills to escape your humdrum existence every now and then, so what if Ethiopians or Bangladeshis die?
I must except those amongst us who do care, who do have a valid historical perspective, who do work for change, who do not support Bush/Blair/Brown and the muppets who surround and advice such monsters. The way forward for the world is one of two ways- continue as we are on the road to “armageddon”, which will see rioting in the streets and a fascist backlash against the immigrants (who are only looking for a share of the worlds resources, for a chance to succeed), or we can start to make changes before the resources and atmosphere is ruined beyond repair.
Anyway, I don’t expect that I’ll get a best answer for this, considering the implications about you from the wording of the question. I don’t much care either way- I know it is the best answer, as it attempts to seriously address the issue, as an adult. You clearly resent the fact that those with least look to the lands that have the most to try and follow our example and grab what they can.
Take care.
