Can UK Spouse travel with UK partner in EU without Visa?

I am confused about Directive 2004/38/EC on the right to move and reside freely…I am a spouse of a British Citizen and therefore i should be allowed to visit countries that are a member of the European Union provided that i have a residence card and i am traveling with my spouse. However, Uk not bein a member of the Schengen Zone makes it a little bit more confusing. Please help.

No, you can’t travel without visa. Directive 2004/38/EC was established based on the fact that the U.K. and Ireland do not participate in the travel part of the Schengen agreement. Whereas a spouse of an EU/EEA citizen residing in any country of the Schengern territory can travel to the other Schengen countries the spouse of an EU/EEA (Schengen) citizen residing in the U.K. or in Ireland could not without the directive 2004/38/EC. However EU nationals who have always lived in the country of their nationality are not exercising EU treaty rights and are therefore not considered Union citizens within the meaning of Directive 2004/38/EC. Their family members therefore are not covered by the visa free travel. A prerequisite to travel without visa is to hold a special type of U.K. residence permit issued to family members of an EEA citizen. Spouses of British citizen hold another document.
