European Union Romania

The real advantage that Bucharest offers is the price. After Sofia, Bulgaria, Bucharest is the least expensive capitol in the European Union to visit and one can easily spend a couple weeks in Bucharest for the same price as five days in London or Paris. Oddly, Bucharest does not have a central tourist office, so here are seven “musts” when visiting the city:
- Palace of Parliament. This building was constructed during the Communist period to serve as the headquarters of the Romanian government. After the Pentagon in the U.S., it is the world’s largest administrative building and is probably Bucharest’s most famous landmark.
- Arch of Triumph. The Arcul de Triumf is modeled on the more famous Arc de Triomphe in Paris. You will find that many of the buildings in the city that pre-date the Communist period follow French styles.
- The Athenaeum. This is the home of the city’s philharmonic orchestra and is listed as a European Heritage site by the European Union. Not only is the building quite beautiful, but concerts are very affordable.
- Cara cu Bere. This is a traditional restaurant right in the heart of the Lipscani district (the old city) that is also a beer hall. For a feel of Bucharest in the 1920s, with excellent and affordable Romanian cuisine, this is certainly the place to go.
- Museum of the Romanian Peasant. While Bucharest boasts the same array of art and history museums found in most European capitols, the Peasant Museum is uniquely Romanian. Very affordable, you will want to allow a few hours for the visit.
- Lipscani District. This is what remains of the city’s old traditional center and is full of antique shops, small cafes, and restaurants. After the sun goes down, this is also where you can find many of the more popular night clubs as well.
- Curtea Veche. No visit to Romania is complete without something related to Dracula (Vlad III Tepes) and while most of the sites are not in Bucharest, the ruins of his old palace are right in the city center. It is small museum, but if you are not going elsewhere in Romania this is the only authentic Dracula relic available and boasts a very large statue of him, great for the quick snapshot.
