Passport requirements when leaving UK?
HI there,
Im a European Union citizen living in UK. My passport will be expiring in Sept 2010 and I will be going back to my country in Aug 2010 to change it to a new one, but just wonder if I might have trouble getting out of UK with passport which will expire in less than a month?? Would be grateful for your help!!
It’s not a problem. The passport vailidity thing is only relevant when you are travelling to a country that you need a visa for entry. Most countries are reluctant ro issue visas for more than the passport validity, hence they normally require 3-6 months validity left on the passport. This also ensures that your passport is valid for the whole of the length of your stay.
Travelling within the EU you can travel right up until the last day of validity as there is no immigration control for EU citizens. The passport is therefore an ID document rather than a travel document as such. If you are a citizen of one of the EU countries that issues ID cards, you don’t even need your passport to travel to another EU country, you can use your ID card.
