What did European Union do to improve the education system?
Important efforts have been made to increase funds for the Lifelong Learning programme of 2007 to 2013. A billion Euros will be devoted to the programme every year.
The Lifelong Learning Programme continues the main actions launched under previous action programs (in particular, it brings together the various actions financed under the SOCRATES Programme and the Leonardo da Vinci Programme).
It has six sub-programs:
1The Comenius programme, supporting actions for schools (from pre-primary schools to upper secondary or equivalent)
2The Erasmus programme, supporting exchanges of students in higher education, as well as cooperation between universities and colleges, etc
3The Leonardo da Vinci programme, supporting actions in initial and continuing vocational education and training (including student and apprentice exchanges, cooperation between colleges, etc)
4The Grundtvig programme, supporting actions in the field of adult education
5The Transversal Programme covering activities in four themed areas across all sectors of education and training: policy cooperation and innovation in education and training; foreign language teaching; development of ICT-based content and services; and dissemination of results of the programme;
6The Jean Monnet Programme, supporting institutions and actions in favour of European integration.
As regards the four specific programmes, quantified targets have been set in order to ensure a significant, identifiable and measurable impact for the programme. These targets are as follows:
•For Comenius:
To involve at least three million pupils in joint educational activities, over the period of the programme;
•For Erasmus:
To contribute to the achievement by 2012 of three million individual participants in student mobility under the present programme and its predecessors;
•For Leonardo da Vinci:
To increase placements in enterprises to 80,000 per year by the end of the programme;
•For Grundtvig
To support the mobility of 7,000 individuals involved in adult education per year, by 2013.
