European Union Countries Visa Free

If you want to get a visa on a country in Europe, and it’s part of the European Union, do you have to get a visa for all of the other countries who joined the European Union or am i free to roam around the countries?
Answer is schengen visa, but you must know that not all european countries signed schengen treaty, for example Switzerland (you must ask for separate visa), etc.
