Fellow Britons, was you aware that we gave the EU an extra £800 million?

Budget sees UK’s EU contribution rise to £6.4 billion

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financetopics/budget/7514853/Budget-2010-Britain-gave-EU-extra-800m-this-year-in-worst-recession-for-60-years.html

The Telegraph reports that figures published in yesterday’s UK budget show that the UK’s contributions to the EU have increased from last year’s estimates. Last year’s budget estimated the UK’s contributions at £5.6billion for this year, but that has been increased to £6.4 billion this year and will rise to an estimated £7.6 billion in 2010/11. The £6.4 billion cost this year is more than twice the £3.1billion contributed last year.

Why do we continue to contribute so much money to the European Union whilst we are in the worst recession for 60 years?

The truth is I don’t know, I gave up trying to understand the point of the EU a while ago. This money would have been better spent repairing the mess in this country, that is the NHS, education and the terrible state of many roads, covered in potholes. Everything is underfunded, yet the Government persists in throwing money away into the EU. It would be interesting if a referendum was held on leaving the EU, but I don’t think that’s going to happen any time soon unfortunately.
