The European Union currently has 27 member states: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.[24] There are currently three official candidate countries, Croatia, the Republic of Macedonia and Turkey. In addition the western Balkan countries of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia are officially recognised as potential candidates.[25]

If this EU doesn’t stop discussing and start investing more of their GDP into NATO, they are going to lose the US and end up part of the Soviet Union, not a European Union.

After the global vilification of George Bush because he is opposed to US isolation, there is not one single politician on the horizon in the US that is going to be willing to deploy troops. They will not expose themselves to the same treatment. Domestic issues lead all other concerns in the US including Iraq. No one in the US gives a damn about Europe and the middle east anymore.
The EU better hope they are prepared to take the lead for their own defense. By 2009 they are going to be on their own. Their cowardly response to the genocide in Bosnia would indicate that they are not. They, once again, had to stand by while the Americans came half way around the world to do their wet work in a place where the US had absolutely no interest.
The US spends in excess of 4.5% of GDP on NATO. Ireland, as an example, only spends 1.5% on defense and even less on NATO because they don’t see themselves at risk. Considering how powerful their economy has become, that is a form of isolation. Good luck. Strange that they don’t see a consequence of or a stake in the war on terror with regard to their economy.
How many of those countries you listed actually have ratified that complicated un-readable EU constitution.
If the union is strong, why did Germany and France enter into separate economic agreement.
Using energy as leverage, Russia may impose a different Union on you if the act doesn’t get together soon and the Chinese are encroaching from the other direction in North Africa. Stay Alert.
